Ben Carson Tells of His Journey from Poverty. By: July • Essay • 1,212 Words • November 26, 2009 • 644 Views. Essay title: Ben Carson Tells of His Journey from Poverty. Ben Carson tells of his journey from in china, poverty. Benjamin S. Carson went from an statement angry street fighter in Detroit to become director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Carson, who attributes his escape from the poverty of his youth to the support and love of his mother, is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including an honorary degree from UD in 1997. His autobiography, Gifted Hands, chronicles the road from a broken home and poor self-esteem to his life today. His second book, Think Big, elaborates on his philosophy of abroad success in against legalization of cannabis, life, and his newest book, The Big Picture, offers an in-depth look at a professional surgeon's life, as well as his perspectives on priorities, race, society, success and living out a life of faith in a complex world.
He and his wife, Candy, created a program known as the Carson Scholars Fund, for students in abroad in china, grades four through 12 in Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C., who meet high standards of academic achievement and humanitarian service. These remarks, presented at UD's 151st Commencement exercises May 27, are printed with permission of Benjamin S. Carson Sr., M.D. Congratulations to all the graduates. You know that a Commencement builds dreams. I think back on a time when I was in your seat and research, also even much further back than that, when I was a youngster sometimes spending hours sitting in the hallways of Detroit's Receiving Hospital or Boston City Hospital.
We were on medical assistance, so we had to wait for one of the interns or residents to finish with all their work so they could see us. But, I used to entertain myself by why study listening to the PA system: Dr. Jones, Dr. Jones to the emergency room; Dr. Johnson, Dr. Johnson to the clinic.
It sounded so important, and I would be thinking, One day, they'll be saying, 'Dr. Carson, Dr. Writing! Carson to in china essay the operating room.' But, of term loss essays course, nowadays we have beepers, so I still don't get to hear it. But, it was wonderful having that dream. You know, you have to have something that inspires you to go on. I have to tell you that things kind of why study abroad essay fell apart for me when I was 8 years old.
My parents got divorced. My mother was one of 24 children and paper, got married at age 13. Why Study! They moved to statement nhs Detroit from abroad in china essay, rural Tennessee, where she discovered that my father was a bigamist. (I was telling that story at a commencement at the University of Utah. Nobody thought it was that strange. No, actually they don't do that anymore in Utah, and the fact of the the notebook research paper matter is, if everybody had the morals of the people in Utah, we'd be in pretty good shape.) But, at any rate, things kind of fell apart, and why study, we moved to Boston. (I was in Boston this past week speaking at the Harvard Medical School commencement.) But, things weren't so good while we were living there. We lived in one of the tenements. Bref Resume! We became very, very familiar with poverty. I'll tell you I learned a very important lesson during that time; it was from my mother.
She had a very difficult life, but she never adopted the why study in china essay victim's mentality. She never felt sorry for herself, regardless of all the things that happened. And, that was a good thing. The problem was she never felt sorry for us, either. Against Legalization Of Cannabis Essay! So, no excuse was ever acceptable, and she would always say if you came up with an excuse, Do you have a brain? And, if the answer was yes, then she would say, You could have thought your way out of why study essay it. Well, eventually we moved back to Detroit; poverty was rampant. Short Essays! I was a fifth-grade student, perhaps the why study in china worst fifth-grade student you've ever seen in resume candide, your entire life. My idea of a good day was when I got somebody else kicked out of class.
Because, I knew that I wasn't going to achieve, and, if I got other people not to achieve, I felt good. Why Study In China Essay! You know, misery loves company. And, my nickname was Dummy. We were having an statement writing argument. (2009, 11). Ben Carson Tells of abroad in china essay His Journey from resume candide, Poverty. EssaysForStudent.com . Why Study! Essay Sample On Why Students Ö
Ketogenic diet does not ďbeat chemo for almost all cancersĒ One of the difficult things about science-based medicine is determining what is and isnít quackery. Essay. While it is quite obvious that modalities such as homeopathy, acupuncture, reflexology, craniosacral therapy, Hulda Clarkís ďzapper,Ē the Gerson therapy and research paper Gonzalez protocol for cancer, and reiki (not to mention every other ďenergy healingĒ therapy) are the rankest quackery, there are lots of treatments that are harder to classify. Much of the why study in china essay time, these treatments that seemingly fall into term memory loss essays, a ďgray areaĒ are treatments that have shown promise in why study in china essay, animals but have never been tested rigorously in phd thesis resource accounting, humans or are based on scientific principles that sound reasonable but, again, have never been tested rigorously in humans. (Are you sensing a pattern here yet?) Often these therapies are promoted by true believers whose enthusiasm greatly outstrips the evidence base for their preferred treatment. Lately, Iíve been seeing just such a therapy being promoted around the usual social media sources, such as Facebook, Twitter, and the like.
Iíve been meaning to write about it for a bit, but, as is so often the case with my Dug the Dog natureósquirrel!óother topics caught my attention. Iím referring to a diet called the ketogenic diet, and an article thatís been making the rounds since last week entitled ďKetogenic diet beats chemo for almost all cancers, says Dr. Thomas Seyfried.Ē Of course, when I see a claim such as that, my first reaction is, ďShow me the evidence.Ē My second reaction is, ďWho is this guy?Ē Well, Dr. Seyfried is a professor of biology at Boston College, whoís pretty well published. Heís also working in why study abroad in china, a field that has gained new respectability over the last five to ten years, namely cancer metabolism, mainly thanks to a rediscovery of writing nhs what Otto Warburg discovered over in china essay, 80 years ago.
What Warburg discovered was that many tumors rely on glycolysis for their energy even in environments with adequate oxygen for oxidative phosphorylation, which generates the bulk of the chemical energy used by statement, cells. I described this phenomenon in more detail in a post I did four years ago about a drug that looks as though its anticancer properties come from its ability to abroad, reverse the Warburg effect. What not to do if you want your hypothesis to be taken seriously. So on the surface, Dr. Seyfriedís argument that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease (an argument Iíll look at in more depth shortly) is against legalization of cannabis, well within the bounds of current oncologic science. Indeed, a few years ago it was all the rage, and I remember attending several sessions and lectures on the Warburg effect and cancer at the AACR meetings three or four years ago, although, oddly enough, I donít recall as many the last couple of years.
In any event, if thatís all I looked at, I probably would have shrugged my shoulders and why study essay moved on, as in, ďNothing to see here.Ē But there are quite a few red flags. Bref Resume Candide. The first red flag is why study abroad in china essay, a claim that a ketogenic diet can treat cancer better than chemotherapy. The second, even bigger, red flag is on Dr. Seyfriedís Boston College web page: In addition, Dr.
Seyfried has worked with noted alternative health advocate Dr. Mercola to provide a thought-provoking discussion on the benefits of phd thesis on human a ketogenic diet. Dr. Mercola provides a thorough synopsis of the abroad in china essay talk on his website, and also includes the original audio recording of their conversation. Uber -quack Dr. Mercola?
Oh, dear. His evident pride at having been interviewed by Dr. Mercola does not reflect well on Dr. Essay. Seyfriedís critical thinking skills and knowledge of medicine. Dr. Why Study In China. Mercola sells quackery. He has promoted antivaccine views, breast cancer pseudoscience, and the rankest cancer quackery, such as that of Tullio Simoncini, who believes that all cancer is coupe, a fungus and that baking soda is the way to treat it, and the Gerson therapy, which involves massive doses of supplements and, of course, twice-a-day coffee enemas. Seriously, this is not the sort of person a legitimate scientist wants to why study, associate himself withóeveróif he wants to be taken seriously. I can see a naive researcher making a mistake and, not realizing who Dr. Mercola is, agreeing to an interview, but thatís the sort of thing that a reputable scientist would do his best to on human accounting, disavow and distance himself from. Neither is the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), which bills itself as the ďvoice of integrative medicine,Ē where heís given a major talk, the sort of organization a legitimate scientist wants to associate himself with if he wants to be taken seriously.
Donít believe me? Just peruse the ACAM website, where you will find lots of chelation therapy, including a program to abroad essay, ďcertifyĒ in chelation therapy and coupe de cheveux detoxification, as well as other quackery. Thereís a good reason that ACAM has appeared in many SBM posts throughout the why study abroad essay years, and not in a favorable light. I emphasize again, this is of cannabis, not an organization with which a scientist who wishes to be taken seriously by why study abroad in china, oncologists associates himself. Also, if a scientist wishes to be taken seriously, he shouldnít say things like this: The low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet can replace chemotherapy and nhs radiation for even the abroad essay deadliest of cancers, said Dr. Thomas Seyfried, a leading cancer researcher and professor at Boston College. In an exclusive interview, Dr. Seyfried discussed why the ketogenic diet has not been embraced by the medical community to coupe de cheveux, treat cancer despite its proven track record both clinically and anecdotally. ďThe reason why the ketogenic diet is why study abroad in china essay, not being prescribed to treat cancer is purely economical,Ē said Dr. Seyfried, author of Cancer as a Metabolic Disease. ďCancer is big business.
There are more people making a living off cancer than there are dying of it.Ē And donít associate yourself with Ralph Moss, the number one promoter of laetrile quackery and the notebook research make easily refuted claims such as the claim that ďchemo and radiation do not cure cancer or extend life, although cancer physicians often make this claimĒ and that radiation ďoften does more harm than good to the patient.Ē Given that all Dr. Seyfried has is a couple of why study abroad essay case studies as clinical support for his treatment (see below) and accounting I can produce reams of studies over in china, nearly 50 years demonstrating that chemotherapy can cure specific cancers and term memory loss prolong life when used appropriately, the ď2% gambitĒ notwithstanding, itís not a winning proposition, and in china it sure doesnít help your credibility to de cheveux a essayer, use the why study essay language of against essay cancer quacks to why study abroad in china essay, promote your idea. So, what, exactly is Dr. Bref Resume Candide. Seyfriedís hypothesis? Red flags or no red flags, it is, of course, possible that Dr. Seyfried is on to something and has let his enthusiasm overwhelm his judgment with respect to whom he associates with and the sorts of statements he makes, many of essay which sound as though they could have come from Stanislaw Burzynski, Ralph Moss, or Joe Mercola. In actuality, he isnít totally wrong, but he isnít totally right, either. As is typical of the notebook research someone without a medical background, in particular an oncology background, he is, basically, putting the cart before the horse, as you will see. In his talk, Dr. Seyfried begins with what he refers to as a ďprovocative questionĒ: Is cancer a genetic or metabolic disease?
Actually, whether he realizes it or not, his question is abroad in china essay, not quite as provocative as he thinks it is, nor is the bref candide answer anywhere near as clear-cut as he thinks it is why study abroad, or as he characterizes oncologists and cancer researchers as thinking it is. Phd Thesis Accounting. Iíll tell you what I think the answer to the question is after Iíve discussed Dr. Why Study Abroad Essay. Seyfriedís hypothesis. In the meantime, not surprisingly, his answer is that cancer is a metabolic disease, while everyone elseís answeróaccording to him, at leastóis that it is a genetic disease, making him the brave maverick doctor, who says things like: The current view now, without any question, is research paper, that cancer is a genetic disease. If you go on the National Cancer Institute website or you read any of the major articles published in why study essay, Nature and Science , often the articles will start with, ďCancer is a genetic disease.Ē I think that this has become dogma. Except that it really isnít, at least not anymore. If you do a Pubmed search on ďtargeting cancer metabolism,Ē which is what Dr.
Seyfried is talking about, youíll find over 22,000 articles, with over 3,000 in 2013 alone, with a sharply increasing curve since 2000 that only now appears to be leveling off. A search on short, ďcancer metabolismĒ brings up 369,000 references, with 28,000 in 2013 alone. Why Study Abroad In China. Cancer metabolism is an candide incredibly important topic in cancer research and has been for several years now, and finding means of targeting the common metabolic abnormalities exhibited by cancer cells is currently a hot area of research. From my perspective, Dr. Seyfried is exaggerating how hostile the cancer research community is towards metabolism as an important, possibly critical, driver of cancer, although, to be fair, one prominent cancer researcher, Robert Weinberg, has been very skeptical. To me, Seyfried just appears unhappy that genetics is why study abroad essay, currently thoughtófor good reasons, I might addóto be the primary driver of most cancers.
Note that I intentionally used such phrasing, because Dr. Seyfried, in my readings, appears all too often to speak of ďcancerĒ as if it were a monolithic single disease. As Iíve pointed out many times before, itís not. Indeed, only approximately 60-90% of bref resume candide cancers demonstrate the Warburg effect. There are three components to glucose metabolism: glycolysis, which feeds the Krebs citric acid cycle, which in turn feeds oxidative phosphorylation. I show them below in why study essay, simplified illustrations: The issue with the term memory essays Warburg effect is that it leads to a shift in why study abroad essay, metabolism that favors glycolysis. As a result of phd thesis on human resource accounting this shift, tumor cells tend to use a lot more glucose than normal cells because glycolysis is much less efficient at converting glucose into abroad in china, ATP molecules used for cellular energy than oxidative phosphorylation.
One reason that this is thought to provide a growth advantage to cancer cells is because oxidative phosphorylation requires oxygen while glycolysis does not and cancers frequently outgrow their blood supply such that they often live and statement nhs grow in tissue spaces where there is essay, not much oxygen. In any case, the avidity of cancer cells for the notebook research glucose has been known a long time and is the abroad essay basis for positron emission tomography (PET) scanning, where a radiolabeled derivative of glucose is the term memory essays most commonly used tracer for exactly that reason: Tumor cells take it up much more avidly than do normal cells, leading to ugly black blobs (old-fashioned PET scans alone) or pretty bright blobs (PET-CT) where there are tumor masses in the scans. The idea behind ketogenic diets is very simple. Abroad In China. If glucose is the primary fuel for cancer, then lower carbohydrate intake and replace carbohydrates with other sources of fuel, such as fats, in order to push the memory essays bodyís metabolism into ketosis. It actually turns out that ketogenic diets are probably useful in the treatment of abroad in china intractable epileptic seizures in children. Unfortunately, their mechanism of action in preventing seizures is term memory, unclear, although four potential mechanisms, including carbohydrate reduction, activation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels by mitochondrial metabolism, inhibition of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, or inhibition of glutamatergic synaptic transmission (glutamate as a neurotransmitter), have been proposed.
Interestingly, the mTOR pathway is an important signaling pathway in many cancers that couples energy and nutrient abundance to the execution of why study in china essay cell growth and division, owing to the ability of TOR protein kinase to simultaneously sense energy, nutrients and stress and growth factors. Of Cannabis. Itís a commonly overactive signaling pathway in cancer. Itís also interesting that the cancers used to produce the basic science cited by Dr. Seyfried are virtually all brain cancers and that virtually all the evidence comes from abroad, rodent tumor models. On Human. For one thing, if there is a tumor type that exhibits the Warburg effect and a high degree of metabolic derangement, itís brain tumors. Itís no coincidence that dichloroacetate was first tested in brain tumors. Why Study In China. In this study, VM/Dk mice were used, and a mouse histiocytoma cell line resembling human glioblastoma multiforme with macrophage/microglial properties derived from that same mouse strain (VM-M3) was implanted subcutaneously. Term Memory Loss. This cell line has the abroad property of loss essays metastasizing quickly and widely when implanted under the abroad in china skin and allowed to grow, which actually makes it not very much like brain tumors, which seldom metastasize and usually kill through local invasion and taking up increasing volume in the closed space of the skull, something the brain most definitely does not like. The results showed that a ketogenic diet increased mean survival time by over 56%, while a combination of a ketogenic diet and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) increased survival time 78%.
The result is interesting, but it is phd thesis resource accounting, a mouse tumor model, not a human tumor model, and that makes its applicability to why study abroad in china essay, humans tenuous, particularly given the nature of the bref resume murine tumor, but probably worth investigating further. Another mouse study cited by Seyfried is one in which dietary restriction was reported to promote vessel maturation in a mouse astrocytoma model. Why Study. Given that tumor angiogenesis is one of short term memory loss essays my scientific interests and I have a fair number of publications on the topic, I was interested. Unfortunately, I ended up being disappointed. Abroad Essay. This was another syngeneic model (i.e., a mouse tumor implanted in mice of the same strain from term essays, which the tumor was isolated as a cell line, like the one discussed above). Abroad. Although it showed increased tumor vessel maturation (which is one mechanism by which inhibitors of angiogenesis work), I wasnít quite convinced, because there was a distinct lack of quantification of the phenomenon, and the microscopy appears not to have been blinded, something thatís critical to avoid unconscious bias in the results. Itís not surprising that this result, which, if more convincing evidence had been obtained, could easily have appeared in Cancer Research , was published in a low tier journal. Itís an OK study, but not fantastic. Certainly it didnít lead me to statement writing nhs, smacking myself in forehead and saying, ďOf course!Ē Throughout his talks, both here and elsewhere, Dr.
Seyfried presents mouse studies that are interesting and abroad in china essay suggestive that there might be something to this whole ketogenic diet thing, at least in short term memory loss essays, brain tumors, such as this one. However, this is what we in why study abroad in china essay, the oncology biz would call pretty preliminary data, worthy of further investigation but not supporting the grandiose claims that Dr. Seyfried makes. We need more beef. We need clinical studies. Unfortunately, theyíre in short supply.
Clinical evidence for ketogenic diets as a cancer treatment. Itís not as though Dr. Seyfried doesnít cite clinical evidence. Itís just that the evidence is so darned thin and unconvincing thus far. For instance, in this talk, the first study he presents is writing nhs, a very small case series (two patients, actually) performed in 1995 in why study abroad in china essay, which two girls with inoperable astrocytomas were placed on a ketogenic diet in order to ďdetermine if a ketogenic state would decrease glucose availability to certain tumors, thereby potentially impairing tumor metabolism without adversely affecting the bref resume candide patientís overall nutritional status.Ē Interestingly (to me, at least) these case reports came from University Hospitals of Cleveland, where I did my general surgery residency. In fact, I was still there in 1995. Unfortunately, I donít have access to the journal back to abroad in china essay, 1995; so Iím stuck with just the abstract. Legalization Of Cannabis Essay. However, the abroad in china abstract is pretty clear: Within 7 days of initiating the ketogenic diet, blood glucose levels declined to the notebook research paper, low-normal levels and blood ketones were elevated twenty to thirty fold. Results of PET scans indicated a 21.8% average decrease in glucose uptake at the tumor site in both subjects. One patient exhibited significant clinical improvements in mood and new skill development during the study.
She continued the ketogenic diet for an additional twelve months, remaining free of disease progression. One notes that the patient who didnít survive 12 months wasnít much mentioned; so I assume she didnít demonstrate any clinical improvement. Why Study In China. In any case, this study doesnít really show anything, other than that a ketogenic diet might decrease glucose uptake in phd thesis, some brain tumors. Itís like a Burzynski case report, in which we have no idea whether the patient did better than expected because of the essay intervention or because she had less aggressive disease. The next case report is from 2010. It describes the de cheveux a essayer case of a 65-year-old woman who presented with progressive memory loss, chronic headaches, nausea, and a right hemisphere multi-centric tumor seen with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Following incomplete surgical resection, the abroad patient was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Coupe De Cheveux A Essayer. Now hereís the kicker: The patient underwent standard therapy plus the ketogenic diet. Why Study In China. A day after her surgery, she underwent a two-day fast, followed by a three day fast beginning a week after surgery, followed by a restricted ketogenic diet (only 600 Cal/day).
Three weeks after her surgery (and two weeks after starting the ketogenic diet) she began standard of care treatment, concomitant radiation plus chemotherapy (temozolomide), ďaccording to standard procedures,Ē which lasted six weeks. The patient also had a gene mutation in her tumor that produces increased sensitivity to temozolomide. The conclusion? Fortunately for the patient, she had what appears to have been a complete response, after which she went on a less restrictive ketogenic diet. Unfortunately, the term patient recurred eight months later. Why Study Essay. By that point, the patient was off of the ketogenic diet. The authorsí conclusion? Because it was ďunlikelyĒ that the tumor would have responded this well on standard therapy alone, it must have been adding the ketogenic diet that done it.
Worse, in the talk, Dr. Seyfried strongly implies that the tumor recurred because she had gone off the ketogenic diet two and phd thesis a half months before her recurrence. Irritatingly, during the same talk, Dr. Seyfried refers to having done a ďbiopsyĒ on the GBM when the why study abroad case report clearly says that the patient underwent a partial excision of the temporal pole with incomplete debulking of the tumor, which is a different thing. When a surgeon tries to phd thesis on human accounting, debulk a tumor, he is trying to remove as much of abroad it as possible. When a surgeon biopsies a tumor, he is trying only to get enough tissue to make a diagnosis. He also heaps scorn on the hospital for insisting that the patient undergo standard of care therapy, clearly demonstrating that he has no understanding of the notebook research paper clinical trial ethics. Abroad In China Essay. What most likely happened with this patient is that the statement debulking was significant, and the remaining tumor was small enough to be eliminated by the combined chemotherapy and why study abroad in china radiation therapyóat least to the point of on human no longer being detectable on PET scan. Also, just because the diet appears to why study in china, have decreased glucose uptake by the tumor doesnít mean that the of cannabis essay tumor was dying. In fact, it might have even made the PET scan less sensitive to whatever remaining viable tumor cells might still have been around, a possibility that I donít see Dr.
Seyfried as having considered. There are other studies, but little or nothing in the way of randomized clinical trials. For instance, a recent retrospective study of 53 patients, of whom only why study abroad essay six followed a ketogenic diet while being treated for GBM, concluded that the diet was safe, but no suggestion of efficacy was noted. More recently, a German group examined the research paper effect of a ketogenic diet on 16 patients with advanced cancer of various types who had exhausted all therapeutic options. The treatment didnít result in any serious side effects, although subjects found it very difficult to why study in china, maintain the diet, particularly in the context of de cheveux a essayer en ligne family life. Only five were able to complete the three month treatment period, and it was reported that these five didnít have progression while on why study abroad essay, the diet. Of the remaining 11, two died early, one was unable to phd thesis resource, tolerate the diet and dropped out very quickly, two dropped out for personal reasons, one couldnít continue the diet for more than a month and three had disease progression within less than 2 months of starting the diet and one dropped out to resume chemotherapy. As a whole, this study was well-nigh uninterpretable due to the different kinds of cancer, other than to conclude that less than 50% of why study in china essay patients with advanced cancer could adhere to the diet, and that those who could generally had no significant side effects.
Of course, itís unclear whether the diet helped the five who could adhere to it or whether those who adhered to it could do so because they had more indolent, less aggressive disease. None of this stops Dr. Seyfried from concluding: Preclinical and case report studies indicated that the restricted ketogenic diet (R-KD) can be an effective ďmetabolic therapyĒ for memory loss managing malignant brain cancer in children and adults. The therapeutic effects of the abroad R-KD against brain cancer can be enhanced when combined with drugs or HBOT that also target energy metabolism. Uh, no. Not exactly. Preclinical experiments are intriguing but fairly limited in applicability, and the case reports demonstrate nothing of the sort.
Thereís more to Dr. Seyfriedís hypothesis, for de cheveux a essayer en ligne example, his idea that metastatic cancer comes about in china because of phd thesis alterations in glutamine metabolism, but unfortunately he appears to misunderstand the genetics of metastasis when he bases part of his conclusion on observations that metastatic cancers often have the same genetic derangements as the primary tumor. Itís been a longstanding question whether clones of abroad essay tumor cells possess the ability to short term memory loss, metastasize as an abroad in china intrinsic part of the candide process of why study in china becoming cancer cells or whether they acquire it later. Given that evolution is accounting, a major force driving cancer cells to become more invasive and why study in china essay that tumors are very heterogeneous, full of lots of different clones with different sets of genetic mutations, Dr. Seyfriedís hypothesis is at best simplistic. Also disappointingly, the evidence for any diet as a treatment for cancer is weak at best. Putting the cart before the statement horse. Clearly, ketogenic diets are not ready for prime time as a treatment for cancer, either alone or in combination with conventional therapy. Unfortunately, that hasnít stopped it from being touted by abroad in china essay, all manner of alternative cancer practitioners (i.e., quacks) and others as a cancer cure that ďtheyĒ donít want you to en ligne, know about or saying things like, ďÖitís nothing short of medical malpractice and negligence to fail to integrate this type of dietary strategy into a patientís cancer treatment plan,Ē as Joe Mercola did. Dr. Seyfried himself has contributed to the hyperbole quite a bit as well.
For example: These studies are all in combination with either radiation or chemotherapy. My preference is to start metabolic therapy with GBM (glioblastoma multiforme). This is why study essay, a devastating type of brain cancer. Metabolic therapy with a restricted KD could be done with a few tumors where you know the conventional standard of care doesnít work at coupe de cheveux en ligne, all. You would choose those kinds of patients and abroad essay do a clinical trial based on historical controls and see what the outcome would be and term memory loss essays see if you could get some level of survival that would match or be better than the conventional standard of care. Regular readers of SBM should know the problem with this sort of abroad essay approach. No IRB worth its salt would approve such a trial because it would be ethically dubious, but, even worse, it would be ethically dubious and it wouldnít really tell us anything unless those few patients either had near-miraculous responses or died very quickly. Anything else would simply tell us that the diet is probably doing no harm. More numbers would be needed, particularly if the comparison is to historical controls, to get even an inkling of whether there might be benefit.
In that case, you might as well do a proper phase I/II clinical trial, which is what is bref resume candide, happening. In China Essay. For instance: Calorie-restricted, Ketogenic Diet and Transient Fasting During Reirradiation for Patients With Recurrent Glioblastoma (ERGO2), a randomized clinical trial designed to short term loss essays, evaluate whether a calorie-restricted, ketogenic diet and transient fasting can enhance the efficacy of in china essay reirradiation in patients with recurrent glioblastoma. Pilot Study of a Metabolic Nutritional Therapy for the Management of Primary Brain Tumors (Ketones), a phase I pilot study in my neck of the woods (at least in my state) looking at the same sort of diet. Ketogenic Diet as Adjunctive Treatment in Refractory/End-stage Glioblastoma Multiforme: a Pilot Study, a small pilot study designed to examine the effect of a ketogenic diet in term memory essays, refractory GBM being treated with Avastin. Why Study. Ketogenic Diet With Radiation and Chemotherapy for writing Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma, a phase I/II trial designed to test whether a ketogenic diet enhances the efficacy of why study abroad radiation and chemotherapy. In other words, clinical data should be rolling in against of cannabis, fairly soon, and thatís a good thing.
In the meantime Dr. Seyfried and other advocates who so passionately believe that ketogenic diets will greatly help patients with brain cancer do no one any favors by claiming unequivocally that cancer is a metabolic disease and why study in china saying that ketogenic diets are more beneficial than chemotherapy for de cheveux patients with brain tumors. This brings me back to the question of whether cancer is a metabolic disease or a genetic disease, the answer to which I promised early on. The likely answer? Itís both! Indeed, a ďchicken or the eggĒ argument continues about whether it is the why study metabolic abnormalities that cause the mutations observed in short loss essays, cancer cells or whether it is the mutations that produce the metabolic abnormalities. Most likely, itís a little of abroad essay both, the exact proportion of which depending upon the tumor cell, that combine in an unholy synergistic circle to drive cancer cells to be more and more abnormal and aggressive.
Moreover, cancer is about far more than just the genomics or the metabolism of cancer cells. Phd Thesis On Human Resource Accounting. Itís also the immune system and the tumor microenvironment (the cells and connective tissue in which tumors arise and grow). Abroad. As Iíve said time and accounting time and in china time again, cancer is complicated, real complicated. The relative contributions of genetic mutations, metabolic derangements, immune cell dysfunction, and short term memory loss essays influences of the microenvironment are likely to vary depending upon the type of in china tumor and, as a consequence, require different treatments. In the end, as with many hyped cancer cures, the ketogenic diet might be helpful for statement some tumors and almost certainly wonít be helpful for others. The Resume Mocked ĎRound the World. With his name and image appearing on the ďTodayĒ show, in The New York Post and all over the Web site Gawker, Aleksey Vayner may be the most famous investment-banking job applicant in recent memory. But he says his new celebrity is less blessing than curse. ďThis has been an extremely stressful time,Ē Mr. Vayner, a senior at Yale University, told DealBook over why study in china essay steak in a northern New Jersey restaurant Thursday. It was his first face-to-face meeting with a reporter since an 11-page application and elaborate video clip that he submitted to securities firm UBS showed up on two blogs, and then quickly spread to every corner of the the notebook research, Internet. The clip, staged to look like a job interview spliced with shots of why study abroad in china, Mr. Resume Candide? Vaynerís athletic prowess, flooded e-mail inboxes across Wall Street and eventually appeared on abroad the video-sharing site YouTube . And the overwhelming reaction was mocking laughter. Mr. Vayner is not amused.
Instead, he said he feels like a victim. The job materials that were leaked and posted for paper public view included detailed information about him that allowed strangers to scrutinize and harass him, he said. Essay? His e-mail inbox quickly filled up, with most of the messages deriding him and, in certain cases, threatening him. Since the video surfaced on the Internet, Mr. Vayner said he has deleted at least 2,000 pieces of e-mail. It was Mr. Vaynerís highly produced video that appears to have made his job application such a viral sensation. A Zen-like koan ó ďImpossible is bref resume candide, nothingĒ ó introduces the seven-minute clip, which shows Mr. Vayner performing various feats of physical strength and skill, interspersed with inspirational maxims. Viewers are presented with images of Mr.
Vayner bench-pressing weights (a caption suggests it is abroad, 495 pounds), playing tennis (firing off what is against legalization, said to why study, be a 140 mile-per-hour serve) and performing martial arts (he breaks seven bricks with his palm). The tone of the the notebook paper, video seems too serious to be parody, yet too over-the-top to be credible. After sharing the clip, fellow students at Yale began to share their favorite Aleksey-style tall tales, notably involving reminiscences of why study essay, bare-handed killings and bref resume, nuclear waste. And then there were Mr. Vaynerís claims about in china essay running a charity, the legitimacy of which is now in question. In person, Mr. Vayner is much as he appears in the video.
Tall, with gelled-back hair and phd thesis on human resource, a navy pinstriped suit, Mr. Vayner ó along with his sister, Tamara, and his lawyer, Christian P. Stueben ó met with DealBook on Thursday afternoon. Throughout the why study in china, interview, Mr. Vayner was reserved, speaking deliberately, sometimes peering at what appeared to be notes in his Yale University portfolio. Mr. Vayner, 23, said he has been interested in short term loss essays, finance since he was 12 years old, when he was creating financial data models. So Mr.
Vayner, who is registered in Yaleís class of 2008, decided a few weeks ago to look for a job at a Wall Street firm. He thought that making a video would help him stand out in the often cutthroat competition for investment-banking positions. Why Study Abroad In China? By emphasizing his various athletic pursuits, which he listed as including body sculpting, weightlifting and legalization of cannabis, Tai Chi, as well as brief stints on Yaleís polo and varsity tennis teams, Mr. Vayner said he could show that he had achieved success in physical endeavors ó success that could carry over to the financial world. ďI felt demonstrating competency in athletics is a good way to stand out, because the same characteristics are the same in business,Ē said Mr. Vayner, who legally changed his name from abroad in china, Aleksey Garber when he was 18. ďThe need to set and achieve goals, to have the bref candide, dedication and competitive drive thatís required in business success.Ē Despite all the mockery that the video has inspired, he still speaks proudly of his athleticism. Nearly all the feats in the video are his, he said, and they are real. (The only doubt in his mind lies in the skiing segment, which he says is probably him.) When asked about a posting Mr. In China Essay? Vayner had placed on the classifieds site Craigslist soliciting skiing videos ó a posting that was reproduced on a blog that questioned whether the skier was him ó Mr.
Vayner said he was simply looking for the notebook research paper the cameramen who shot his ski-jump efforts. Much of the other Internet chatter about him, mentioning studies in Tibet under the Dalai Lama and a ďBlood SportĒ-type tournament in Thailand, is why study essay, false, he said. Such claims stem from what he described as a satirical article in the notebook research paper, Yaleís tabloid, the Rumpus, detailing outsized claims from him when he was still a pre-freshman. The author, a then-student named Jordan Bass, was merely giving his opinion, Mr. Abroad In China? Vayner said, and did not directly interview him for the article. In a piece in this weekís New Yorker magazine, though, Mr. Bass said that he was merely reiterating what Mr.
Vayner had told him. In the against of cannabis, end, though Mr. Vayner said he is less concerned about the mockery ó ďOne mark of abroad in china, success is the ability to handle mass amounts of criticism,Ē he said ó than about what appears to have been a leak of his application materials from UBS. Bref Candide? Mr. Vayner and his lawyer, Mr. Stueben, confirmed that they are exploring legal options against the investment banks to abroad in china, which he sent the application. A UBS spokesman said in candide, a statement: ďAs a firm, UBS obviously respects the privacy of abroad essay, applicantsí correspondences and does not circulate job applications and resumes to the public. To the extent that any policy was breached, it will be dealt with appropriately.Ē However the de cheveux a essayer, job materials landed on the Internet, the scrutiny has raised several questions about Mr.
Vaynerís claims. On Wednesday, the blog IvyGate posted excerpts from Mr. Vaynerís self-published book, ďWomenís Silent Tears: A Unique Gendered Perspective on why study abroad essay the Holocaust,Ē which until recently was available on the Web site of Lulu Press. IvyGate searched the Internet and found that many sections of the book seemed to have been copied from other Web sites. Asked about the of cannabis, similarities, Mr. Vayner said Thursday that the text on Luluís Web site was a ďpre-publication copyĒ based on an earlier draft. The final version was worded more carefully, he said.
On his resume, Mr. Vayner cites his experience as an investment adviser at a firm called Vayner Capital Management and his charity work at an organization called Youth Empowerment Strategies, of abroad in china essay, which he was the founder and chief executive. Term Essays? Until recently, both organizations had active Web sites, explaining their missions and guiding principles. A statement on in china Vayner Capital said its philosophy was, ďNever lose investorsí money.Ē Youth Empowerment Strategies featured a four-star banner said to bref candide, be from Charity Navigator, an evaluator of nonprofit charitable groups. Asked about Youth Empowerment Strategies, however, a representative of Charity Navigator said it had not given the abroad in china essay, group a coveted four-star rating. Phd Thesis On Human Resource Accounting? Instead, it had referred Mr. Vaynerís organization to the New York attorney generalís office, saying it should be investigated for potentially posing as a fraudulent charity. Mr. Why Study Abroad In China Essay? Vayner said Thursday that he had filed the necessary paperwork for coupe de cheveux a essayer en ligne the charity in August. Furthermore, he said that he had outsourced the design of his charityís Web site to companies in India and Pakistan and had no role in abroad in china essay, placing the bref resume, Charity Navigator banner on it.
Mr. Why Study In China? Vayner told a reporter that he had the writing, banner taken down immediately when he learned that the group had disclaimed the why study in china essay, banner, some time around Sept. 15. When a reporter then told Mr. Vayner that the banner was still on the site as of last week, Mr. Vayner clarified that he had sent notification to take down the banner. Mr. Vaynerís explanation does not satisfy Trent Stamp, Charity Navigatorís president. Term Memory Loss Essays? The group had first attempted to contact Youth Empowerment Strategies in early August, but its e-mails bounced back, Mr. Stamp told DealBook.
After learning Mr. Why Study Abroad In China? Vaynerís new-found Internet fame earlier this month, the group redoubled its efforts, he said. ďIím not on the governing board of Yale, but it seems to me that someone who committed massive charity fraud with intent to against legalization essay, deceive people shouldnít be able to why study abroad essay, receive an Ivy League degree,Ē Mr. Stamp told DealBook. A Yale spokeswoman declined to comment. Asked for details about his investment firm, whose Web site has since gone dark, Mr. Vayner said he hopes to obtain his investment adviser license next year, but insisted the company was legitimate. He also stood by Vayner Capitalís stated mission of never losing money. It was not a promise, he said, but merely a philosophical polestar. ďI have two rules,Ē he said. ďOne, I will never lose your money. And two, when in doubt, refer to the notebook, rule No.
1.Ē For now, Mr. Vayner said he is why study essay, camping out at term memory loss his motherís residence in abroad in china, Manhattan, having taken a short leave of absence from Yale when his video hit the Internet. He said he may have lost his chance to work on Wall Street, and added that he may not succeed in securing a financial job at all. Real estate development is an option, he said, but for now his future is unclear. In the meantime, he plans on taking his midterm examinations next week. All photos by Emile Wamsteker for The New York Times. Comments are no longer being accepted. This guy is a villian of Ernst Stavro Blofeldian proportions. The mystery is why it took so long for someone to take the axe to bref resume, this rooster.
I am deeply disturbed by in china, a resume sent in confidence to a highly respected firm had been made public and coupe de cheveux, that confidence broken. Should we all worry about where are resumeís end up once sent to the firm of our choice? Typical. What else would you expect out of Yale? no more recruiting at Yale for sure. Whatever. This guy just exemplifies the kind of why study abroad, people you find at Yale.
I have seen his picture and his body frame. The Notebook Research Paper? There is why study essay, NO WAY he can bench 495 Pounds if his picture is Current. He does not have the Muscle mass or just the pure size to do it. Term Essays? Even if it was ďStrongĒ muscle and in china, not ďWideĒ Muscle. His chest area would have to be about 3-4 inches wider on each sideÖjust to ATTEMPT it. Classic 15-minutes of essays, fame, but getting a story in why study in china, the Time is pretty good; I bet this guy finds a pretty good job, after all. I agree with poster above who mentions how a private resume would find itís way out to the wide world. Thatís a little dicey, to say the least. More of these kinds of things are on the horizon, no doubt, if not, as demonstrated here, right under our noses already. Thanks for reading, Dick Laresch, Jersey City, NJ.
Tell him to do a Ph.D at Yale then preach some more. May I suggest you join GW Bush and Gang Ė they have been defrauding US citizens all too successfully since whenever! Your talents will be much appreciated there. If he had spent the same amount of term memory essays, time actually doing what he said he did, heíd be much better off! stories sound similar to those of a curent clothesless emperor who attended Yale.
Naah, the emperorís contain more lies. ďI have two rules,Ē he said. Abroad In China? ďOne, I will never lose your money. And two, when in doubt, refer to rule No. Research? 1.Ē This guy is hilarious. Why Study In China? He should lay low, wait tables for a couple years, then try to get back in the game. What a jokeÖĒCoffee is for on human resource accounting closers,Ē buddy, and thereís no way in why study, h e l l you can hit a tennis ball 140 mph. my advice to against legalization essay, mr. vayner: drop the finance career aspirations, you were made for reality TV. Did it occur to in china essay, anyone that this may have been a test by the young man of how major corporations handle job applications? If so it was brilliant. And whoever at UBS leaked it needs their head examinedĖafter they are escorted off the premises.
Sharing humor is one thing; leaving in the notebook paper, the personal identifiers is quite another. Not sure Iíd hire the young man, but Iíd sure like to talk to himĖheís clearly a risk-taker with a sense of humor. Not sure what to think of his other venturesĖdishonesty or just naivete or perhaps part of the why study, test to bref resume, see if anybody actually checked his resume. Iím amazed at in china how many people still donít! This is an excellent piece of reporting. Pity the national press corps does not dedicate this level of resource accounting, scrutiny to other Yale alumni who have hoodwinked this nation for the last 18 years. Abroad In China Essay? As the short memory essays, body count of why study, American soldiers in Iraq approaches the body count from 9/11, is anyone going toe-to-toe with decision makers on their decisions and activities? Or will reporters keep eating the Snowfall? I agree with Martha. Although the kid is obviously a ridiculous egomaniac and not a particularly good liar, the candide, real guilty party here is UBS.
We can forgive Mr. Vayner on grounds of immaturity, but what excuse does UBS offer for having leaked documents delivered to it for the purposes of a normally confidential job application? It hardly inspires confidence in the clumsy financial giant. What is its claim to why study, have ďthe heart and soul of a two-person organization,Ē but a more polished and more damaging lie than those Mr. Vayner offered? It seems to be going unremarked upon on human accounting that even the tagline of his video, ďimpossible is nothing,Ē was filched from a recent Adidas ad campaign. Next stop for this guy should be The Apprentice.
This story is easily distilled: either the why study abroad in china essay, charity was legitimate or it was a fraud. That issue is not nearly as murky as Mr. Vayner wants us to believe. If it was a fraud, then his video is not a resume but a work of fiction, and nhs, I would be dubious about any privacy claims Mr. Vayner and his lawyer put forth. Moreover, if it was fraud, Yale should do the honorable thing and expel him.
Mr. Vayner: Refer to comment number 10. If not successful, just come down to why study abroad in china essay, Brazil and you will be instantly named President Lulaís personal advisor. That kid should be stripped of his degree. Research? It seems reasonably clear that he has lived a life of lies; after some investigation Iím sure that Yale could confirm any doubts of his credentials.

essay nam viet war American Studies Resources Centre at LJMU. Vietnam: a watershed in war writing. by Richard Hills. The experience of Vietnam changed forever the nature of writing about war in American culture. Literature on the two World Wars tapped into a sense of cultural identity, masculinity and individual heroism to essay describe the American response as heroic and victorious and promote an idea of a Ďgood warí in which national interests are ultimately restored. By contrast, the Vietnam War was fought against a background of bref a culturally fragmented society. By examining the work of writers such as Norman Mailer, Tim OíBrien and Michael Herr, and why study, the photographs of Tim Page, it explores the short essays, way in which war was portrayed in a far more realistic, if often ugly light. This article is adapted from the winning entry in this yearís essay competition, Richard Hills, a final year student at Liverpool John Moores University. Posted 13 February 2003.
Honesty in writing. The Historical versus the personal in war writing. The war in Vietnam continues to evoke images and representations of an enduring and traumatic nature and remains a dominant political, social and moral benchmark in the contemporary American cultural consciousness. The textual diversity in literature, art, journalism and music of Vietnam is extensive, and chronicles the histories and abroad in china essay, legacies of the struggle to reflect a range of legalization of cannabis social and why study abroad in china essay, cultural anxieties that were borne out of the experience. Historically therefore, war texts have operated as genres which have had their origins in expressing and revealing the experience of conflict and working as mediums by which a society can make sense of a particular national and cultural situation. Contemporary preconceptions of Vietnam are perhaps due largely to the imagery prevalent in this multiplicity of statement writing nhs textual information. The diverse accounts of the histories and experiences of the conflict in literature can be seen as fairly interdisciplinary in their approaches, since the styles and aims of war reporting are both quite broad and ultimately similar in in china their aims. The variety in terms of methodology is also widespread, ranging from the fictional novels of DelVecchio for example, to personal memoirs in legalization a first person narrative, oral histories and also factual journalistic reportage.
Due to the contrasting styles and abroad in china essay, graphic content of against essay war writing, the literature of why study Vietnam can perhaps be seen as displaying ideologies of combat much more prominently than any other type of genre Ė both in terms of form and also in outlook. Against Legalization Of Cannabis! Consequently, war writing has therefore functioned as traditionally dominant generic form. In China! As a result, there is phd thesis resource accounting a sense in which a linguistic authority has developed in these texts in order to reflect war as action, war as institution, war as nation, and war as an individual autobiographical experience. It is clear therefore that war writing is rich in form and aims to why study abroad in china highlight a collection of contrasting perspectives and ideologies in order to against legalization of cannabis essay externalise the various emotional experiences of war. As a result, it can be interpreted that a primary narrative intention is concerned not only with an attempt to categorise experience of battle in historical and abroad in china, personal terms, but also an attempt to embody the tension between the historical and the personal in the text. David Wyatt, in his collection Out of the Sixties , recognises the importance of war writing as culturally and historically important and asserts his view that Ďthe thread that ties these various genres together is the importance of a common response and the need to represent these culturally insidious images.í This essay will consider a variety of essay cultural responses to the war in Vietnam and will firstly examine the writing of Michael Herr and Tim OíBrien in order to address the distinctive styles and objectives of war literature.
The essay will also examine the impact of photographic narratives as dominant cultural and historical accounts. Through an analysis of why study essay these texts in terms of their style and form, the on human accounting, essay will then ask what these narratives are ultimately trying to why study in china essay achieve in their portrayals and de cheveux a essayer, representations and why study in china, will consider whether they work in establishing a sense of the futility and horror of Vietnam. The prominence of a more innovative and modern approach in the literature of Vietnam can be seen as widely removed from the style of war writing of World Wars One and Two. By tapping into and referring to a sense of resource cultural identity, masculinity and individual heroism, this previous war literature had its origins in providing enduring cultural narratives and ideologies of the American national and why study in china, of victory. Consequently, it had been difficult to statement writing produce an abroad essay anti-war novel due to coupe de cheveux a essayer en ligne the ways in which such texts functioned as dossiers indicative of conservative American ideals and which were complimentary to why study abroad a patriotic consciousness. By suggesting and describing the American response as heroic and victorious, there is a sense in which these texts promote an idea of a Ďgood warí in which national interests are ultimately restored and delivered in ways an American public would appreciate. These novels are therefore seen as reflexive of the current social and historical conditions in their outlook. As a result, there is a sense in which they can perhaps also work as propaganda literature in their assessments of the enemy and in the endorsement of national welfare. In contrast, Norman Mailer was aware of the social and on human, cultural implications during which the earlier war genre was produced and attempted to construct reactionary images in his literature so as to why study in china counteract the paper, political implications this writing brought about. By simultaneously attempting to de-humanise the concept of war and highlight war literature as a device that could criticise domestic policies, Mailer was immediately able to render the military effort futile and critique the conflict through bold emotional imagery and a more negative military representation.
The Naked and the Dead. In his novel The Naked and the Dead , Mailer is somewhat radical in his appraisals of the war effort and attempts to reflect the essay, more unsavoury nature of combat in a couple of ways. Firstly, by discarding the accepted American idea of a Ďgood warí and secondly by replacing the traditional stereotyped representation of the heroic and crusading American soldier with a less dramatic portrayal. Through his presentation of the writing, soldiers as sex driven, brutal, racist alcoholics, and by commenting on the graphic description of the war effort, Mailer is able to highlight the futility of modern combat and present Sergeant Croft as a pseudo fascist madman. In doing this, Mailerís character representation subverts the earlier image of the why study abroad, American soldier and asks questions about the phd thesis on human resource accounting, validity of the common stereotype of the American soldiers as gallant and laudable heroes. Mailerís characters are revealed as extremely un-amiable in their treatment of why study themselves and the enemy.
In Nicolas Tomalinís extract from The New Journalism entitled The General Goes Zapping Charlie Cong , the American soldiers indicate their reluctance to recognise the Vietcong as human in a refusal of individuality. ď ĎThereís no better way to fight than goin out to shoot VCs. Aní thereís nothing I love better than killiní ĎCong. No sir.í ď In contrast, Mailers characters acknowledge the enemy as human whilst remaining committed to legalization of cannabis the massacre of the enemy to provide a comment on why study abroad essay, the futility of the conflict. The fact that Sergeant Croftís more liberal superior ultimately dies, suggests a metaphor to on human American society and offers a social critique on how war represents a nightmare scenario and in china essay, will ultimately condemn and divide a functional society Ė as if a comment on the disruptive, conservative and bureaucratic nature of war. Mailerís writing can be seen as a satirical attack on attitudes to war through his condemnation of the war effort and the traditional assertion of war as Ďgoodí. His style consequently contradicts and differs from the position of earlier war writing due to Mailerís insistence that war is essentially socially unjust. In this sense, The Naked and the Dead can be seen as a re-negotiation of generic values to ultimately express a nihilistic vision of the effects of war on the individual and society. Mailer successfully brings to light the disparity between certain representations of phd thesis on human accounting war as Ďgoodí and what is seen as a more accurate reality of unprecedented horror and moral betrayal.
The Things They Carried. Tim OíBrien explores similar themes in his account of Vietnam in The Things They Carried. The form of the text can be regarded in contrasting ways, in terms of a fictional novel or as a collection of personal memoirs. According to David Wyatt, Vietnam found itself, in the writing of it, ďcaught in why study essay a style match between what could be called innocent and informed accounts.Ē In thinking of the research paper, book as an informed account of Vietnam and therefore as chronicled non-fictional accounts, The Things They Carried can be seen as typical of returning to the old tradition of war writing. This is recognisable in terms of the narrative emphasis OíBrien places on in china essay, group camaraderie, individual heroism, and research paper, the way in which he and the other soldiers refer to the Vietcong as ĎCharlieí, - to reflect the ideology of American patriotism and the idea of the noble soldier fighting for why study abroad, justice. However, it is much clearer that the majority of the narrative is concerned with emotional turmoil and the distressing burden of the war effort, in this sense revealing the trauma and threat and working as an research paper innocent narrative despite OíBrienís own Vietnam memories. In the chapter The Man I Killed OíBrienís language encapsulates his horror, guilt and fear after having killed a young Vietcong soldier; ďHis jaw was in his throat, his upper lip and teeth were gone, his one eye was shut, his other eye was a star shaped hole, his eyebrows were thin and shaped like a womanís, his nose was undamaged, . his clean black hair was swept upward into a cowlick at the rear of his skull, Ö there was a butterfly on his chin, his neck was open to in china essay the spinal cord and the blood there was thick and shiny and it was this wound that had killed him.Ē The way in which OíBrien describes the dead man provides an indication of the brutality and terror of war and is in keeping with Mailerís adoption of the innocent war writing technique in The Naked and candide, the Dead . The sense of abroad essay unique grievance that OíBrien exudes through his language in his chapter highlights the fact that Ďwar hurtsí and also reveals the reality of ĎKillingí.
It is interesting that OíBrien makes use of a somewhat poetic style of language to describe a dead body in what might appear to candide be an attempt to disguise the horrific injuries and the suffering of war. More realistically however, is the idea that this descriptive style is intended to why study essay provide a more informed vision of the conflict and in doing so, makes the statement, reader aware of the in china essay, extent of the suffering. The poetic references in language parody the brutality and de cheveux a essayer en ligne, masculinity of war in the description of his feminine features. The Ďstar shaped holeí is in china essay perhaps symbolic of the American flag and a reminder of the expectations of a nation for its soldiers to kill and destroy. At the same time however, the graphic nature of the language is equally indicative of both the graphic nature of bloodshed, and also the consequent emotionally draining aspect of the war. ďWe had ways of against legalization of cannabis essay making the dead seem not so deadÖ. In China Essay! By slighting death Ö we pretended it was not the terrible thing it was.Ē
The fact that OíBrien finds it hard to come to terms with something that was readily expected of him as a soldier shows how Vietnam has forced him to internally struggle with his conscience. Furthermore, he is as a result unable to adhere to the stereotype of being the Ďkillerí society expects of him. This highlights OíBrienís sentiments of vulnerability and against, insecurity in abroad in china essay elation to the enemy. OíBrienís character seems to embrace wholeheartedly the role of storyteller and social critic in the text. He is convincing in his argument that the text is a work of fiction rather than an informed account based on personal experience. En Ligne! He discards the relevance of any informed authority in his accounts of war when he states: ďCan the foot soldier teach anything important about the war, merely for having been there? I think not. Why Study In China Essay! He can tell war stories.Ē
In the quantity and quality of his work, OíBrien argues for well-told stories, as the least the phd thesis on human resource accounting, war deserves. This is inherent in his assertion that if war fiction were produced exclusively by accurate accounts of events in Vietnam, then the destructive nature of combat would be more difficult to achieve in writing. This is due to the fact that the soldiers failed to recognise and in china, appreciate the occurrence of singular events in relation to a sense of an resource accounting ultimate developing drama. OíBrien admits that in war stories, ďabsolute occurrence is irrelevantĒ. Why Study Abroad Essay! He makes the case that by retaining the importance of a degree of fiction in war novels; Vietnam can be given a shape that conveys its disparaging and negative forces in a broader context. David Wyatt emphasises that Ďthe reflexivity of all war Ö becomes in writing The Things They Carried a masterful self-reflexivity, a continual re-figuring of earlier work in order to tell us ďHow to Tell a True War StoryĒ.í Ultimately, OíBrien suggests that war stories insist upon and perhaps largely consist of their desperate attempt to obtain or reflect the truth; conforming to the rhetoric of abroad re-telling.
This use of repetition functions as a way of making sense of the warís impact of devastation in both physical and personal terms. Michael Herrís landmark invention of a new journalistic voice in Dispatches is similar to The Things They Carried in terms of it also attempting to represent the confused reality of Vietnam. The narrative is distinctive in terms of being a collection of factual journalism and reportage, and delivers innovative methods of relaying events through impressionistic and image-laden accounts of the struggle. In this sense, the accounting, text offers fresh and exciting ways of codifying the Vietnam experience. In contrast to the standard conventions and established language of why study abroad in china orthodox war reporting, Herrís journal is a composite of reports and articles to extend beyond an autobiographical account and ultimately offer a wider historical and cultural awareness of the conflict of Vietnam. Although Dispatches is generically different in the way is it not presented as a work of fiction, it is comparable with Tim OíBrien in the sense of being a text primarily concerned with providing stories about the American experience in Vietnam. His achievements in bref resume the text arise from the implementation of a disjointed narrative that immediately reflects the popular consumer culture amongst the abroad in china, American soldiers to legalization ultimately portray a fragmented imagery of the conflict.
Consequently, Herrís narrative comprises of a multiplicity of language; he creatively fuses the vocabulary of American youth and drug cultures by utilising hippie vernacular, pop lyrics, military jargon, black slang and technical press terms in what can be interpreted as a very post-modern appraisal of the Vietnam struggle. ďHe had the name Marlene tattooed on his upper arm, Ö On the back of his flak jacket he had once written, ďYea, though I walk through the Valley of the shadow of Death I shall fear no evil, because Iím the meanest Muthafucker in the Valley,Ē but he had tried later, without much success, to scrub it off because, he explained, every damned dude in the DMZ had that written on their flak jackets. In China! And heíd smile.Ē Herrís accounts of the war are presented in a language that buys into short the consciousness of the generation and which therefore inherently condemns the why study abroad in china essay, Vietnam conflict. Short Term Loss! This discourse of language is rich in the idea of humanity that transcends earlier war literature and consistently opposes the more horrific side of Vietnam. Dispatches makes much of the comradeship of the soldiers and emphasises the role of charity in the face of adversity.
This alternative narrative in terms of style and language embodies Herrís reportage as a critique of conventional war journalism. His narrative and use of abroad essay techniques such as montage are in contrast to the notebook research the approach of standard media correspondents, and reveal the difficulties involved in writing traditional Ďstoriesí about Vietnam. The often-fragmented nature of Herrís narrative helps the reader to obtain a position in which to abroad in china essay fully appreciate the experience of Vietnam, rather than relying upon a traditional linear discourse of narration. However, the bref resume, subject matter of the text is in china perhaps less reliant on highlighting the actual experience of Vietnam, and would prefer to discuss a fuller exploration of that experience. Rather than attempt to recreate the war in a literary documentation, Herrís objectives can be interpreted as wanting to examine and investigate his memories of Vietnam.
His approach is based on the assumption that in order to obtain a more meaningful insight into the struggle; it is necessary to leave behind the actual events of the war and attempt to locate the experience of it in a much broader context. This approach is similar in form to the suggestions of Tim OíBrien in his work. Herrís experience in Vietnam highlighted a problem in terms of condemning the popular representation of war in popular imagination and attempting to replace these images with what was considered to be a truthful reflection of American experience in de cheveux a essayer Vietnam. Herr maintains that the flexible nature of why study abroad in china essay war literature in promoting the idea of a Ďgood warí and the image of the heroic soldier hindered the reader from arriving at a truer and more meaningful understanding of the the notebook, hostility of war. Dispatches offers an alternative insight into the role and experience of the soldier. Due to his fragmented narrative and plethora of linguistic jargon, Herr seems to suggest that Vietnam was futile from the point of view of all those who experienced it and stresses the impossibility of arriving at fixed meanings and rational thinking. Herrís text is therefore symptomatic of a text rich in why study abroad in china essay the discourse of truth and writing nhs, brutal reality. Why Study Abroad In China Essay! Rather than trying to explain or rationalise the war in any length, the stories of Herr and other correspondents such as Tim Page, were primarily concerned with attempting to writing capture the horror and abroad in china essay, beauty of the place Ė and thereby offer a more realistic and representative account of life in Vietnam.
It is therefore clear that the work of writers such as Mailer, OíBrien and Herr have had their origins in an attempt to re-emphasise the narcissistic nature of combat, whilst managing to retain and highlight the importance and beauty of life in an appraisal of phd thesis resource accounting humanity. These texts both discard the notions of war as something symbolically rewarding, as was the case in previous war writing, and replace these sentiments with ideas about reality and civilisation. By highlighting the devastation of the war effort through both brutal and compassionate language and imagery, the essay, reader is in a position to bref resume attain a more realistic account of the nihilistic characteristics of a war, and the effects this has in relation to individual experience. The war photography of Tim Page. With the publication of Dispatches in 1977 came to essay prominence the work of Vietnam War photographer Tim Page.
Pageís photographic evidence of of cannabis essay Vietnam is complimentary to Herrís written accounts in the sense that they both share a common quest to abroad highlight the warís experience both in terms of grief and on human resource accounting, suffering, but also in terms of recording the drug and why study abroad in china, rock aspects of GI culture. Herr quotes Pageís reaction to a request from a British publisher for a book which would ďfinally take the glamour out of the war.Ē ďTake the glamour out of the war?! I mean, how the bloody hell can you do that ? Go and take the glamour out of phd thesis on human resource a Huey, go take the glamour out of a Sheridan Ö Can you take the glamour out of a Cobra or getting stoned on China Beach? Ö Oh war is good for you, you canít take the glamour out of that. Itís like trying to take the glamour out of sex, trying to take the glamour out of The Rolling Stones Ö I mean, you know that, it just canít be done.Ē Dispatches led to a revival of interest in Pageís work. In an exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in why study essay 1980, Page made an issue of the Ďglamourí of Vietnam and recalled how Ďgroovyí it had been playing with helicopters, tanks and piloting Skyraiders. The point Page was trying to make through his photography was that war always was, and always will be, heavily invested in glamour, with glory and in machoism such is the representation of conflict in memory popular imagination.
The popular fascination with the glamour of war was therefore perhaps a result of the ways in why study abroad in china essay which war had been previously reported, with much emphasis having been placed on the heroic and gallant actions of Ďgoodí soldiers. However, Page delivers an alternative view on the glamour of war. Rather than choosing to short term memory portray Vietnam in terms of heroic action, Page captures much more outrageously the feelings and in china essay, sentiments of a large demographic of women, children, soldiers and correspondents through pictures of great melancholy beauty. By dramatising the rock and roll aspect of GI culture, Page can be seen as subverting traditional representations of war and suggesting alternative ways to characterise what he believed were the realities of conflict. Consequently, perhaps Pageís most striking pictures are those in which he records the sixties-psychedelic side of the GI culture, and documents the terrorised black and white American soldiers in coupe de cheveux ďthe inanity of their predicament and the refuge they took in dope and rock.Ē This particular quality of the war was perhaps unique to Vietnam and is what Page refers to when he discusses the Ďglamourí of war. Why Study Essay! This is not to short term memory essays say however that Page fails to recognise the more mundane aspects common to all wars such as the abroad, destruction of society and the indignity of suffering.
It is simply that Page attempted to capture the enduring sense of legalization of cannabis essay reality in why study essay all areas to highlight a sense of perceived glamour in terms of suffering. In this sense, Pageís photography centres on the ultimate reality that there is bref candide no glamour at all. Page recognises and highlights through his work that the earlier representations are capable of glamorising the indignity of war. Consequently, Page can therefore be regarded as being conscious of the realities of war, whilst still retaining his own private sense of glamour. Tim Page is essay typical of a collection of Vietnam artists who realised that their texts needed renegotiations of what had gone before them in terms of form and style, and in doing so, offer new interpretations and conclusions in their work. Such was the supremacy and dominance of the war image in popular culture that the reality and lived experiences were sometimes only partially discovered. As a consequence, a distinction between what was considered fact and fiction was exposed to suggest that many experiences were interpreted as fictional stories.
The actual events of combat had given way to images of how the war was fought and term memory loss, what it was fought for, thanks to various military and political discourses. The narratives discussed in this essay however, focus on the cultural expressions of the actual nature of war and the more contemporary disciplines that were implemented in order to highlight an ultimate attack on the socially, culturally and politically destructive qualities of abroad essay conflict. In an analysis of the literary realism of conventional war writing, the American soldier is often deemed as inherently proper and constructed in a typically righteous light. It can be argued that this discourse is limited in vision due to the way in accounting which these novels tend to evade the more difficult and unwelcome issues of war, preferring to Ďmake senseí of the experience. As a consequence, these narratives could realistically apply to any example of conflict such are the conventional methods in terms of style and form, and the way in which they fail to capture the ambiguous realities of why study abroad essay war.
The reliance on factual material in an informed account of war also seems inappropriate in that this technique neglects to address fundamental experiences and lived realities of soldiers. The work of Herr, OíBrien and Page in particular, evoke much more vividly the exhilarating honesty of the Vietnam experience in terms of externalising the rock and bref resume, roll aspect of Vietnam and highlighting diverse elements of hope, power and in china, loss. At the the notebook, same time, the texts attempt to highlight in powerful terms the development and demise of the individual through the experience of combat, and refuse to why study abroad in china essay lose sight of the on human resource accounting, very real suffering the conflict caused on abroad in china essay, a wider level. Even though Herr and OíBrien realise and against legalization of cannabis essay, admit that sometimes the why study abroad in china essay, distinction between fact and fiction is occasionally blurred, their success in capturing the contemporary emotion of Vietnam transcends the idea that informed realism in war writing matters. Ultimately therefore, the writing succeeds as documents which re-evaluate popular ideas by commenting on the more futile and ineffectual nature of battle and the broad consequences of it.
